Just Another Taco Tuesday (🎶to the tune of Manic Monday)

Published over 3 years ago • 1 min read

It’s the Tuesday after #GivingTuesday2020, Reader, and that means another theme-day blitz is behind us. It also means that nonprofits have had a week to reflect on their GT2020 campaigns and count up all their cash. The verdict: it went well. Very well.

On its website, GivingTuesday.org reported that “34.8 million people participated in GivingTuesday 2020, a 29% increase over 2019". Further, it reports that total giving increased from $1.97 billion to $2.47 billion in the United States alone - a 25% increase over 2019. And if you’ve read my blog about last year’s GivingTuesday, you know that while the global event has continued to grow year-over-year since its inception in 2012, over the long term charitable giving in the US has struggled to keep pace in terms of its percentage of the GDP.

Still, given the broader context of 2020 and the fact that nearly every aspect of life has received the pandemic treatment (not to mention the success of the just-in-time #GivingTuesdayNow effort in May that raised $503M) GT2020’s huge participation numbers and dollars raised are a bonafide triumph.

If the recent election and GivingTuesday are any indications, Americans seem to be swiping right on participation these days. It’s been like an IPO for humanity.

These big numbers seem to accurately reflect what I’ve seen on social media from nonprofit leaders: overwhelmingly positive reviews of their campaign results. One member of our private Changemakers group on Facebook reported that her organization surpassed its goal by over 40%. Which goes to show that anything is possible - even when no one knows what to expect.

Also inside Changemakers last week, we started our weekly live discussions - kicking it off with a chat about thanking donors by using engaging email sequences and a workshop to get them written and set up for the year. Next week, we’ll be talking about the problems with team morale and focus under pandemic WFH conditions and how to get teams to rally around their missions while 6 ft apart. Hop into Changemakers to join the discussion tomorrow at Noon. (You need to be “approved” for membership but there are only a couple of quick questions to answer.)

You can also check out this week’s workshop here: Workshops.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Tuesday programming...

Keep Up the Good Work,

Bernadette

P.S.

Did you have the results you expected for GivingTuesday 2020? Or did you decide not to particpate? I'd love to hear about what did (or did not) happen at your organization - please drop me a line at ItsBern@BernadetteMack.com

Dear Reader, My latest blog post is about how startlingly few nonprofits send consistent email to donors and subscribers. A study I'd read recently made me think of this famous line from 1967's Cool Hand Luke... The report, from NextAfter, said that only about half of nonprofit organizations send a confirmation or follow-up message when someone makes a donation or subscribes to the organization’s mailing list. HALF. We all know how critical the first 30 to 90 days are to the lifecycle and...

Dear Reader, My father was a drill sergeant in the US Army. At about a buck-twenty-five soaking wet, I think the hat was bigger than he. But, he didn't let his size stand in the way of delivering a killer basic training (aka boot camp). Today (and tomorrow) I'm hosting a free training about email list-building and I'm calling it a boot camp, too. But, don't worry, I'm referring to the THIRD definition: boot camp noun : a camp where people who have recently joined the U.S. Army, Navy, or...

I'm resending this to you, Reader, because I got a lot of great feedback from readers and I wanted to be sure you saw it: Dear Reader, At the beginning of this year, I set several business goals for myself and I started using a simple system to track my progress. Because my business is new, two of my top goals are: getting more visibility and expanding my reach. Therefore, I keep a spreadsheet of my community growth activities that I update every month. I just love to tally up the gains! Now...
